As per the resolution adopted in the second Conference for Tribes and Tribal (Scheduled) Areas held at Lohardaga (in the then Bihar) in the year 1953, Government of India took the decision of setting up Tribal Research Institutes in all the States of the Country. In West Bengal, activities for development of tribals were looked after through 'Aboriginal Cell' under the Land Reform Department of the Government of West Bengal. A separate department of the Tribal Welfare was formed in 1952.
In the month of May 1955, Cultural Research Institute started functioning from "Mitra Building situated at Lyons Range, Kolkata -700 001".
Office of the Cultural Research Institute was shifted from Mitra Building to New Secretariat Building and stayed there upto 1981.
Then the Institute started functioning from its own building at P-1/4, C.I.T. Scheme, No. VII-M, V.I.P. Road, P.O. Kankurgachi, Kolkata - 700 054. By this time, as a separate Directorate of the department, the Institute performed its activities through various sections viz. Research & Planning, Statistical, Library, Audio-Visual, Museum, Training and Publication.
With the help of applied research and evaluation study/survey, the Institute helps the department to take up various programmes for development of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes of West Bengal. |
